Caught this “Do it like a Dude” video today for the first time. So astounding was the difference in tone from the first single of hers I had heard ‘Price tag’ that I mistook Jessie J for someone else.
First I must say, excellent lips.
On another note though, I’m not particularly fond of the song. This is in large part down to genre bias and it just not being my thing. So it goes.
I do however have a minor gripe with the song and its attitude. I find that too often the perception of doing things like a man is considered mainstream media shorthand for being strong. While I can clearly see that this song shows a grittier and maybe more satirical version of ‘doing it like a dude.’ The over emphasis on aggression, dirtiness and almost chart breaking levels of “rude ‘tude” aside. I fear that many will just see the over arching message as doing it like a man is doing it with attitude, strength and bravado.
Personally I believe strong women are not a version of strong men, they are something else entirely different. That we do not have to emulate men to have strength.
and yes I know, it is just a pop song, I’m taking all too seriously.
